KITAS in Indonesia: types, requirements and validity

Last reviewed October 2, 2026

A KITAS is tied to what you do in Indonesia, so the right type depends on your reason for staying: working, investing, joining family, studying or retiring. Each type has its own terms and a maximum total stay. This guide covers the main types, what an application usually needs and how long you can hold a KITAS.

The main KITAS types

Indonesian immigration publishes the Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) by activity. The official list is long: each activity has its own category, with its own code and terms. These are the ones most foreigners ask about.

  • Skilled worker and employee: 180 days, 1 year or 2 years, up to 6 years in total.
  • Foreign investor: 2 years, or 5 to 10 years, up to 10 years in total.
  • Family reunion: terms vary, up to 6 years in total.
  • Student: 1 to 2 years, up to 6 years in total.
  • Second home: 5 to 10 years, up to 10 years in total.
  • Senior citizen aged 60 and over: 1 or 5 years, depending on the type.

What you usually need

The common documents are a valid passport, an integration statement (not needed for unmarried children under 18) and documents showing the activity you will carry out. Most categories also need a sponsor, such as an employer, a company or a family member.

The application goes through the immigration application system to the local immigration office. The foreign national, the sponsor or an authorized representative can submit it.

How long you can hold a KITAS

A KITAS can be extended, but an extension cannot be longer than the first permit. For most categories the total is capped at 6 years. Foreign investors and second home holders, among others, can reach up to 10 years.

Every KITAS has an end date, so plan the extension before it arrives. The guide to KITAS extension covers the filing window and what protects you from overstay.
