How to extend or renew your KITAS

Last reviewed October 2, 2026

A KITAS can be extended before it expires. The key rule is timing: file the request and pay the immigration fee before the permit ends. An extension cannot be longer than your first permit, and the total time on a KITAS is capped.

When to file

For permits valid up to 1 year, the official page says the request can be filed from 30 days before expiry. For longer permits it can be filed from 3 months before. In both cases the last day to file is the day the permit ends.

Windows can differ by category, so check the one for your permit type. Do not leave it to the last day: filing early leaves time to fix a missing document.

Filing and paying in time protects you

Under the official rule, an extension request that is filed and paid for before the KITAS ends is not counted as overstay, even if the decision arrives after the permit date.

What you usually need

The common documents are your valid passport, your current KITAS, an integration statement and your sponsor’s documents. Some categories, such as investors, also need proof that the commitments behind the permit are being met, for example bank statements, company records and tax documents.

The sponsor or the applicant files the request. Approval comes from the head of the immigration office or, for certain categories, from the Director General of Immigration.

How long an extension can be

An extension cannot be longer than the first permit you received. The total time on a KITAS is capped at 6 years for most categories, and at up to 10 years for certain investment categories.

How Migravia helps

Extensions are part of Migravia’s Immigration Services and Expatriate Services. We reach out 90, 60 and 30 days before a permit expires and prepare the file, so the request is filed well inside the window.
