KITAP: requirements and how to get permanent residence
Last reviewed October 2, 2026
A KITAP is Indonesia’s permanent stay permit. Most people get one by changing status from a KITAS. For workers, religious workers, investors and elderly visitors, the official page asks for at least 3 consecutive years in Indonesia since the KITAS was granted. A KITAP is issued for 5 years and can be extended without a fixed end.
Who can change from KITAS to KITAP
The official page lists these groups: workers, religious workers, investors, elderly visitors under the senior citizen program, spouses and children of KITAP holders, spouses of Indonesian citizens (married for at least 2 years), former Indonesian citizens and children of mixed marriages.
For workers, religious workers, investors and elderly visitors, the page requires that you have been in Indonesia for at least 3 consecutive years since your KITAS was granted.
What you usually need
The general documents are a valid passport, a copy of your current KITAS, a residence letter (surat keterangan domisili), and an integration statement. Each category adds its own proof, which often includes a sponsor’s letter and, for investors, company documents. Workers, religious workers and investors may also need a recommendation from a government ministry or agency.
How long a KITAP lasts
A KITAP is issued for 5 years at a time and can be extended without a fixed end. It is a residence permit, not citizenship. Sponsor documents are part of many KITAP applications, and the documents differ by category.
Plan from your first KITAS
Because of the minimum time in Indonesia, the path to a KITAP starts with your first KITAS. Keep every extension on time and keep your sponsor documents current, so the application has an orderly history behind it.
